Description: Join us for a unique event that highlights the sedimentation problem in Lake Pepin with creative activities, casual dinner, and picture-worthy scenery. Guests will grab a beverage and have the option to ferry to a nearby island that is growing at an alarming rate. In the shallow water— where the island continues to grow— guests can engage with activities and enjoy refreshments at tables, all at their own pace.

An ongoing boat shuttle will be available to ferry guests to and from the main cabin. A casual picnic dinner will be available at the main cabin, including a grilled main course, summer salads, and desserts. Complimentary wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages will also be available throughout the evening.

Everybody will convene at the main cabin for a short presentation at 6:30 PM.

Mud Picnic Activity Stations:

  • Walking on Water: Professional photographer, Chap Achen, will be taking photos of guests “walking on water” while large boats and barges pass in the background nearby.

  • Mussel Search: Mike Davis from the MN DNR will be helping guests find and identify mussels on-site. These sentinel creatures are important water filters and water quality indicators. (See Mike’s Animated Mussel Video & Ask an Expert Video)

  • Drone Footage: Dan Traun will be taking aerial photos of the event from overhead.

Main Cabin Activities:

  • Dinner: Grilled protein, summer salads, and dessert.

  • Educational Materials: Learn more about Lake Pepin and LPLA’s mission to protect it for future generations.

What to Bring: If you plan to ferry to the island for the activities, you will want to wear shorts or short pants so you can walk in the water. If conditions comply, the water will only be ankle deep. We also encourage you to bring a lifejacket if you have one (we have many, but might run low if we have a high turnout). Other items you could consider: sunscreen, hat, water shoes, and sunglasses.

High Water and/or Inclement Weather Disclaimer: The full vision of this event is contingent on normal water levels and good weather. Due to the amount of planning required, however, the event will continue high-water or low-water, rain or shine. Activities will be restricted to the main cabin, if conditions do not comply.

Parking: Please carpool, if you can. Signs and balloons will help guide you from Highway 61, just south of downtown Red Wing. LPLA staff will guide you to a parking place once you arrive.
